Ken's E-mails: Bag tax stinks worse than kitty litter?

Ken's E-mails: Bag tax stinks worse than kitty litter?

By Ken Schram

SEATTLE - There was certainly quick and definitive response to my commentary that, by and large, supported Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels plan to start charging people 20-cents for every plastic and paper grocery bag they use. (Read earlier commentary here.)

From Karen Nininger: "Mayor Nickels, your idea - plain and simple - stinks worse than used kitty litter."

Sandy Marinelli: "More tax. Always more tax...Money is the reason they are doing this. That's why they will tax paper as well as plastic (bags)."

Frank Connelly: "Why use a paper towel when you could use cloth? Wasteful, I tell you! Paper towels are killing the planet! And we should all use leaves to wipe our butts, otherwise add a 10-cent tax (per square of toilet paper)."

Donna Downing: "The mayor proposes to penalize the hapless shopper for the misdeeds of packaging manufacturers at a time food prices are rising exponentially."

Brian Broker: "We need to think of solutions to problems instead of just collecting more money (or just bitching about it) and solving nothing."

And finally, from Bobbi Malone: "I get so tired of negative...approaches and waiting for some punishment. Isn't there something more positive...that will motivate people? (And) if you don't talk nice, I'll stick bubblegum on your chair."

Hmm. What flavor?

Thanks for writing everyone.

Have a great weekend.

And be sure to join Ken, along with John Carlson, on "The Commentators", which airs every weekday from 3-6 p.m. on AM 570 KVI.

It's a lively exchange of information, insight and perspective with two guys who don't agree on much, but still manage to enjoy each other as they tackle issues of the day. Even better, callers are invited in on the verbal action.
