The Schrammie: Enlighten this, oh DOT manager
By Ken Schram
SEATTLE -- It sounds so New Age.
Or maybe Ramtha has come back as an "enlightened" traffic consultant. So while we're forced to meditate on "speed harmonization", why don't we ask State Department of Transportation Manager Carol Hunter to quit honking her horn and come on down. Ms. Carol says "speed harmonization" (which will lower speeds on stretches of interstate 5 by as much as half) is like pouring rice through a funnel. The slower you pour, the more rice gets through. Sometime next year, the DOT will spend $25 million to install electronic signs on I-5 that will dictate how fast we can go if we actually could go fast. All while we "harmonize" like little grains of rice being poured through a funnel. Traffic harmonization. Not to be confused with traffic facilitation, traffic reduction, or anything close to traffic relief. Just another duplicitous tactic from DOT engineers to leave us with the impression that something can come from nothing. So for wasting our money and wasting our time, take a bow Ms. Carol, because this "Schrammie" is for you. |
