Ken Schram: It's just a game

Back in the day, the nuns at my elementary school said that comic books would rot our minds.
They also pushed the idea that rock 'n roll was a tool of the devil designed to steal our morality. I make note of those observations only because a notoriously violent video game is about to hit the store shelves. "Grand Theft Auto IV" will drive parents, politicians, and social do-gooders nuts. There will be renewed debate over whether such games should be regulated or even banned. "GTA IV" has everything that prissy people will raise a fuss over: Blood, gore, lap-dancing strippers and amoral characters who make immoral choices. Mind you, the game comes with a 17 and older rating, because it's clearly not meant for youngsters. But that fact will be lost in the cacophony of indignant voices that will bemoan how low society has sunk when such a video game is offered as entertainment. Conservative groups are already calling on retailers to not sell the game. I'd suggest everyone take a deep breath. Relax. It's a video game. It's not going to steal souls.
