Web site flagged as breeding ground for ill will

MARYSVILLE, Wash. -- Local parents are being warned about a Web site that allows users to post gossip anonymously without substantiating the claims.

Alex Stone says high school is hard enough without people lying about her on the Internet.

Stone is one of hundreds of people who are trash-talked on the Web site gossipReport.com.

"Oh my gosh, 'blah blah's doing drugs', or 'he's an alcoholic', or what they are saying about me -- I'm cheating on my boyfriend and having sex with all these guys," she said.

With the slogan "you tattle, we tell," the site asks its users to post pictures and gossip, then invites the remaining users to rate the gossip they read.

"So it just invites (the idea of) making up terrible things," said Stone.

Assistant Superintendent Gail Miller says the school district has since blocked the site from all school computers since the site's material can potentially trigger violence among students.

But Stone says the damage has already been done.

"Now that people wrote that on there about me, I've had other people come up to me at school and say rude comments about it and stuff," she said.

But the Web site's creator claims her intention wasn't to fuel the rumor mill.

"We do not condone lies. And I am concerned if users are lying," said Elizabeth Bloch of Wilmington, North Carolina.

Bloch said false statements can be deleted and liars can be banned. However, she did not elaborate on how she polices the truthfulness of the countless comments posted by users nationwide about people she does not know, especially in cases in which the user remains anonymous.

Bloch claims the Web site provides an important service.

"This is a way for people to police each other," she said. "And this is a great benefit to society, to say this person did this and it was OK, or it was not OK, and everybody can judge that."

The site's popularity has soared not just in Marysville but also across the country. But some worry spreading rumors, especially ones that are untrue, may one day take a terrible toll.

"When they say stuff like that, some people get really hurt by it and they could commit suicide," said Stone.
