AUBURN, Wash. -- A woman was killed and five others, including several children, were injured in a crash along a busy Auburn street Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred just after noon in the 3400 block of 'A' Street.

Sgt. Scott Near with Auburn police says the drivers of a red Honda and a black Buick may have been involved in an altercation while southbound on 'A' Street. The two cars then bumped into each other, sending the Honda swerving into oncoming traffic.

A woman in her 40s driving another car in the opposite direction was struck head on by the vehicle that crossed into oncoming traffic. The woman driving the car that was hit died at the scene.

A northbound pickup truck who came upon the scene of the accident could not stop in time and slammed into the crashed vehicles.

The woman driving the swerving Honda, who is in her 20s, is reportedly pregnant. She was taken to Auburn Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Police say she had three children inside the vehicle: two boys aged 3 and 5, and an 18-month-old girl. The children were injured and rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle along with their father, who was also inside the car. All four were listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday afternoon.

It's not known what, if any relationship there was between the female driver and male passenger.

Police say the driver of the Buick involved in the initial collision sped off. Police found the vehicle abandoned about two hours later. They also found the 22-year-old driver shortly after the incident and took him into police custody; however, detectives say the man denies any involvement in the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

Near said investigators are not sure yet what caused the first crash, but that the male passenger in the Honda and the people in the Buick apparently knew each other and there was communication between the two right before they bumped into each other. Police don't know yet who bumped who.

The crash closed down 'A' Street in both directions for much of Tuesday afternoon so police could investigate the crash.

The victim's name has not been released.
