KENT - A 16-year-old Auburn boy was stabbed to death and another boy was injured during a fight between teenagers on a dead-end road near a small park early Saturday.

And now disbelieving friends have started an impromptu memorial, leaving messages and flowers for Jaspreet Atwal at the spot where he collapsed. Some of the messages express outrage, others express shock and sympathy.

King County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart said Atwal and two other boys - another 16-year-old from Auburn and a 14-year-old from Kent - were at a juvenile party near SE 227th Place and 133rd Ave NE earlier in the evening.

The party broke up about midnight because of noise complaints from neighbors. The boys, now with three girls, went to a dead end in the 10900 block of SE 230th St., next to the playground area of Park Orchard Elementary.

It's a gathering spot where young people from different cliques often hang out, say neighbors.

An argument erupted between the one of the youths in Atwal's group and four other males who were also there. The argument became physical, and at some point during the altercation, Atwal and other 16-year-old were stabbed.

The fight ended and Atwal tried to drive off with his friends. However, within a few blocks he collapsed, and the car went over a curb and up against a bush.

A neighbor, Chris Wallace, heard the screams and went outside to find Atwal's friends pleading for help.

"He was just saying, 'My friend's dying - what do I do? (He was) just freaking out - didn't even know what to do with himself," Wallace said.

Wallace and his neighbor both called 911, but the teenager died of a single stab wound at Harborview Medical Center hours later.

The second boy's stab wounds are not life-threatening.

The latest violence worries neighbors who say this park is a popular hangout for teenagers who bring violence and drugs into their community.

"It's probably just a spot where everyone comes to hang out there, and it creates different cliques of people and it just causes problems," said Wallace.

The investigation into the stabbing and what precipitated the fight is continuing. No arrests have been made yet.
