Video shows panic as runaway crane rolls down Tacoma hill
By Keith Eldridge
TACOMA, Wash. -- The operators of a runaway crane say the driver did everything he could to steer the big rig away from trouble before he bailed out last Friday.
On Monday KOMO News obtained video that captured the action as the crane went flying downhill. The video captured panic among the crowd as the huge crane came down the hill right for them. "Get out of the way! Get out of the way! Get out of the way," a patron of a Quizno's restaurant is heard yelling. The crane came to a rest on the concrete barrier having missed cars, people and buildings in its path. "We could all be gone, because we were all standing right here,:" said Quizno's employee Nigel Smith. "I wouldn't be here right now, really. But I am here, so I thank God." Mountain Construction owns the crane. They say the brakes failed as the driver was coming downhill on 15th. Part of the way down, the power to the steering was lost and the driver jumped out of the cab. "He could have bailed out immediately and he didn't. He stuck with it was long as he could do anything positive to control it," said Jeff Stroud, vice president of Mountain Construction. The company says those brakes had just been serviced three weeks prior to the crash. The only left to see now is the damaged barrier where the crane came to a rest. There's also the temporary street light at the site of the crash. But very little happened otherwise, and people say that's something no less than amazing. "It's pointed at us and I don't see how it happened out of all of the possibilities of running over hundreds of people it ended up stopping on the girder. What are the odds?" said Cody Kuzior, Quizno's owner. "I don't think there are words to describe how lucky anyone was with this incident," said Steroid. The company is seeking to find out what happened while everyone is marveling at what didn't happen. No one was killed or even scratched. Mountain Construction says the initial investigation at the scene did not show any reason why the brakes and steering failed. |
