Thanks to all who submitted and participated in another year of Pool's Parade of Lights. Sort of an unusual year with all the severe weather wreaking havoc on power supplies, but many weathered the storms. Our feature has ended for 2006, but we'll leave this page up for a few days after Christmas in case you want to drive around -- we just can't guarantee any of these displays will keep their lights on past the 25th.

Special thanks once again to super Parade of Lights photographer Stephen Ramaley for driving out to these displays all across the Puget Sound area on his own time and getting them on film for our nightly feature.

We look forward to seeing all of you in 2007!

Sincerely,
Scott Sistek, Parade of Lights Producer

Pool's Parade of Lights is proudly sponsored by the Seattle Symphony.

A neighbor nominated this house, saying the homeowner works very hard at putting up lights every year for the neighborhood and has been doing so for over 20 years. The neighbor says the owner dresses up as Santa every year for the children on the school bus to see on their way home from school, and stands out in the yard and waves to them as they pass by.

With the angel sounding the coming of a new holiday season, the chain saw bear has gifts in paw for Santa & his reindeer. The snowpeople skating the rink along with the rest of Santa's helpers ridding the Ferris wheel & penguins sledding on the candy canes are all kept safe by the tin solders in this winter wonderland. And to remind of the true meaning of Christmas, Mary & Joseph along with the kings & critters are looking on at the Christ child in the manger. Jim & Naomi have 14,000 lights with homemade scenes for you to enjoy this holiday!

Jason Mertl uses plywood, painted black, so the lights show up. He has friends and relatives draw an outline, of candy canes, presents, angels-all in the Christmas theme. He then drills holes along the outlines and inserts the bulbs from strings of mini lights into each hole, from the backside of the plywood. Jason says it takes deceptively large number of lights to fill the flats. He figures he has used at least 100,000 bulbs here. The flats are held in place with 2x4's. The result is a very clean and professional looking display.

Now here is your really big display -- 250,000 lights, computer controlled by seven Light-O-Rama boxes, using 112 channels. Lights move to over 10 minutes of music piped to your car over a low power transmitter at 104.7 FM. You might think the creators of this show might be a bit smug, but that is far from the case. Jeri Ginnatry head of the Ginnatry family says he puts on this display for one humble reason "to see the smiles on peoples faces." He is also seeking donations for the Toys for Tots program. Learn more about Jeri and his display next Tuesday December 19th, he will be a guest on First News at 4-right here on KOMO TV.

Follow the signs up Vicki Johnson’s driveway, it will direct you to the North Pole and the front yard that looks like a cross between Christmas, Fourth of July and Disneyland. It turns out the exploding star is an electronic 4th of July decoration. Vicki and her decorating crew added 13 foot strings of rope lights for effect. The star is 20 feet tall. Vicki, assisted by her husband Rick and 10 members of their car club put in and estimated 180 man hours of work to create the feeling that you are somehow in another world.

This display has matured from only a few items four years ago to what you see today. As the Johnson’s drove around each Christmas looking at lighting, Vicki thought "I can do this." And so the star and everything else was born. The Johnson’s also light for Easter, Fourth of July and Halloween.

It looks like a mechanized museum. A window to some kind of fantasy world created by a toy maker gone mad. Not you're everyday Christmas display. Dan Breidenstein began this Northgate area tradition 26 years ago with an animated train-the wheels moved the stack smoked and moving creatures played in the yard.

Enter Dan Pardy. Pardy's ideas were magical-he was blessed with both mechanical and creative talents. The Dans got together and this is the result. The pair will typically spend the first half of the year putting ideas on paper, experimenting with designs and trying to get the right look, according to Vonnie Breidenstein. In the early days the Dans used wooden cams, string , fishing line, bicycle chains and old rotisserie motors to move their creations. Over the years the display and the characters evolved into what you see now, creatures which are seemingly alive. Elves building toys, rain deer that dance, mesmerizing every child who visits. Get out of the car, walk up and take a look, this display will draw you in to another world.

Another year, another great light show at the Igl residence! Unfortunately, like many things around the region, their lights display suffered moderate damage due to winds shattering large numbers of bulbs. One week and a few shopping trips later, broken strands were replaced and everything was close to normal again but just not the same. While adding more than 2,000 lights from last year, they think they're over 12,000.

This display of about 1,000 lights uses just 72 watts of power -- less than one string of traditional holiday lights! The display includes LED rope lights, snowflakes, icicles, and many strings of multi-color and single color LED lights. All of the lights were purchased locally - no special orders or mail order products are used.

Rich Starkgraf and his friend Rich Sardarov are gradually convincing everyone in their Poulsbo cul-de-sac to decorate for the Holidays. The centerpiece of this whole thing is the brainchild of Rich Sardarov. He decorates his mother's house. Rich tries to stay away from buying his animated pieces. He builds them from scratch and like the master maestro-he controls each one from a series of switches on his porch. Plywood, old fan motors and other salvage are put to good use. He is a stickler for detail, each year trying to one up himself with new inventions. There is a bubble machine. Smoke pours from the train stack. He built a working snow plow. A fire truck manned by singing Grinches puts out a fire. There is separate music for each set up. This display brings out the child in all of us.

David Bowman and some of his neighbors looked at the holiday lights blazing on their block and decided "we should be doing something with all this power we are using." That something turned out to be collecting food for a local Mt. Vernon food bank called "Neighbors in need." As several area neighborhoods have discovered, much can be accomplished when residents work together, creating a multi-house light show. Last Saturday night one family passed out apple cider as people drove by.

At times a steady stream of cars and busses will fill 18th place. David and his neighbors would like to see bins full of food with traffic jams every night. The block even pooled their money and took out an ad in a local newspaper soliciting donations.

When it comes to volts and amps Jerry is a bit more knowledgeable and prepared, than most. He is an electrician. His 55,000 Kilowatt generator, designed to automatically start running when the power grid goes down, kept things lit-a small pool of light in an otherwise dark landscape.

The Becks have been doing this display for about 10 years. The music is piped over a small ¼ watt FM transmitter on 89.3 which Jerry and his son built from a kit. This year the computer has logged about 30-50 visitors a night-over 800 cars total so far. Jerry Lois and the boys hope you enjoy your visit. They hope you will show your appreciation by giving to your favorite Whidbey Island charity.
