Couples pray God picks up where doctors left off

BOTHELL - The Cedar Park Church has been gaining popularity with a prayer service that centers around couples trying to have children against medical odds.

Pastor Joe Fuiten says over the last 19 years of performing the service, he's see hundreds of couples beat the odds even after doctors told them their chances were slim to none.

Churchgoer Christy Haugo says the service has already done wonders for her family.

"It wasn't going to happen, I didn't ovulate," she said. "That it wasn't going to happen without medical help, so we started some infertility treatment, decided to stop and come to this prayer service, and got prayed for."

In fact, the Haugos got more than just one miracle. Christy and Rich Haugo are now the proud parents of four.

And they're not alone. The Gustafsons, who now have a girl of their own, are also firm believers of the power of prayer.

"You know, you keep trying and you keep trying and often times you get discouraged, and you just want to give up," said Polly Gustafson. "And it just allows you a place where you can come and lay your burden down."

That's why this particular service is held every year. Families who are fortunate enough to have kids have a chance to pray for those who are desperately trying, like Deborah and Clay Kirkland.

The Kirklands came all the way from their home in Athens, Georgia to attend the service and pray for a miracle.

"We started trying to get pregnant, and we were labeled medically infertile," said Clay Kirkland.

"I felt really encouraged, I felt very hopeful," said Deborah Kirkland. "There were a lot of testimonials from people who were in similar situations and received prayer, and then nine months later, a year and a half later, three years later, they were pregnant and had children."

The Kirklands are hoping for a little Georgia Bulldog, and Pastor Fuiten says time has taught him that anything is possible.

"People say it could be just coincidence, but I have observed that the more I pray, the more coincidences I have," he said. "You know, when you have hundreds, you say, 'well, it's a coincidence of great regularity.'"
