Orting water possibly contaminated

ORTING -- The city of Orting is advising residents not to use the city's tap water after someone trespassed into the city's Harman Spring water facility.

Police are not sure if it was an act of vandalism or not, but since it is theoretically possible the water from this source could have been contaminated, all customers are advised to not drink the tap water until tests have been taken to show the water is safe.

The Orting School District said all schools would be closed on Tuesday.

The City of Orting's Public Works Director, Dean Kaelin said, "We know someone broke into the Harman Spring water facility. We have collected samples from the source and the distribution system to check that the water meets state standards. We are concerned about the well-being of our customers and are issuing a notice for consumers to not take chances on drinking the water until it has been tested and shown to be safe. The testing will not be complete until Wednesday."

Anyone who needs water for medical treatment and is unable to leave their homes to get bottled water should contact the Pierce County Emergency Operations Center at (253) 798-7470.

The City will notify its customers when the water has been confirmed to still be safe for drinking, cooking, and other household uses.
