Students: Spend money on education, not war

Hundreds of demonstrators marched for miles down the streets of downtown Seattle on Wednesday in hopes of sending a message: spend money on education, not war.

The group, mostly comprised of high school students, called their event "Books Not Bombs." The students ditched their books for the day to make a public statement against the war in Iraq.

"It's the unity," said Ben Funkhouser, a protester. "Everybody gets together and they can say that kind of thing and we can talk and we can express that as a group."

Protester April Nishimura says it was refreshing to see so many young faces at the event.

"It's wonderful to actually see young people coming out and showing that they really care about something, because I think our generation has been pegged as being apathetic," she said.

The protesters marched from Westlake Plaza to the Federal building, then to City Hall and to the School District Headquarters. The protesters took up the entire street most of the way, but they refused to apologize.

"This is the tip of the iceberg. And it needs to be more organized, it needs to be bigger. It needs to be in your face," said Dallas Meyer, a protester.
