SEATTLE -- In case you weren't up early (or late) enough to see it, photographers around the world captured this morning's lunar eclipse.

The Earth's shadow crept across the moon's surface early Tuesday, slowly eclipsing the moon and causing it to turn shades of orange and red.

An eclipse occurs when Earth passes between the sun and the moon, blocking the sun's light. It's rare because the moon is usually either above or below the plane of Earth's orbit.

The moon emerges further out of the earth's shadow following a total lunar eclipse early Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, near Greenwater, Wash.

The moon is seen being covered by a shadow from the earth in Bogota early Tuesday.

A fully eclipsed moon is visible over the National Weather Service Building in Norman, Okla.

The eclipsed moon emerges in a series of four photos taken in Jakarta, Indonesia.
