Kitten stuffed in bag and left for dead

Kitten stuffed in bag and left for dead

By KOMO Staff

LYNNWOOD, Wash. -- A small black kitten is lucky to be alive after someone stuffed the animal into a duffle bag and left him in the sun behind a dumpster.

"I can't imagine why someone would feel the need to do what they did to him," said Kay Joubert, with the Progressive Animal Welfare Society. "He clearly had to have been put in that bag because it was zipped up."

A man who lives at the building where the kitten was left heard the animal crying last week and saw the bag moving. He opened the bag and took the kitten to PAWS.

On Monday the kitten was running around the PAWS facility, apparently none the worse for wear after his ordeal.

"He was basically passed out, unable to stand up on his own," Joubert said of the kitten's condition when it was brought in.

The animal's body temperature was 107, which is very high for a cat. The staff at PAWS immediately put cooling blankets on him and got fluids into him, then gave him a name.

"We decided he needed a positive name," Joubert said. "After everything he'd been through and since he was baking in the sun, we decided to name him 'Sunny.' "

A surgeon neutered Sunny on Monday, so he's now ready for adoption. And Joubert and others are ready for his abuser to be found and arrested.

"It's not a joke, it's not something to be taken lightly," Joubert said. "It was intentional."

Anyone with information about what happened to the kitten is asked to call police. If you're interested in adopting him, you can contact PAWS at 425-787-2500.
