Shawn Kemp Formally Charged With Possessing Marijuana, Cocaine

SEATTLE - Former Sonics star Shawn Kemp has been charged in Seattle with possessing marijuana and cocaine.

The King County prosecutor's office says Kemp will have three choices when he is arraigned in district court: plead guilty to a gross misdemeanor, ask for a trial on a felony drug charge in superior court or enter a drug court program that could result in the charges being dismissed.

Kemp was arrested with a friend, Gavin Lamar Jones, in Kemp's truck parked behind a car wash April 4 in Shoreline. Jones, a 35-year-old Renton man, faces the same charges.

An officer checking on the truck smelled marijuana and searched the truck. The search turned up the marijuana, cocaine and a loaded handgun registered to Kemp.

Jones told police the drugs belonged to him.

The 35-year-old Kemp, who has a home in Maple Valley, was released without bail after a night in jail.

Kemp is a five-time All-Star who was drafted by Seattle in 1989 and played for the Sonics until 1997 when he was traded to Cleveland. He also played for Portland and Orlando before retiring in 2003.
