The National Weather Service says an observer for the highway watch reported a tornado that touched down about 4 miles east of Sultan around 1:50 p.m.

The tornado stayed on the ground for about a minute before dissipating back into the clouds.

There were no signs of damage, nor any reports of damage.

Based on the lack of damage, it will be classified as an F0 tornado on the Fujita Scale -- the weakest rating on the scale.

Washington averages about one tornado per year somewhere in the state. There has not been a deadly tornado in the state since 1972, when a strong tornado killed three people in Vancouver.
