Some sports bras lend more support than others
By Good Housekeeping
Do you have any idea when the first sports bra was created?
Believe it or not, only some 30 years have passed since its invention. The first sports bra was created in 1977 by Hinda Miller, who is now a member of the Vermont state Senate. Finding the right sports bra used to be impossible for some women, but a lot has changed. Today's new designs cover your back and your front. Like free weights or yoga mats, gym-friendly sports bras are essential for to your workout. "When you're on an elliptical machine or a treadmill and you're running, sometimes your chest is moving faster than you would like it to. And it's a little painful," said tester Lauren Gerken. Kathleen Huddy with the Good Housekeeping Research Institute says the right sports bra can take away the discomfort, even for women with bigger cup sizes. "We did a number of tests on these garments and had women who were size D cup up to a size triple-D run in the bras. Then we measured their breast movement because we wanted to see how well the breast supported the breast," she said. Testers thought the Maia bra ($44) by Moving Comfort lived up to its name. "This was a non-underwire bra. It had a nice wide elastic bottom that was coated with a terry cloth finish. It had the adjustable velcro straps that also goes up to a size E," said Huddy. Another winner was the Champion Powerback Underwire Bra ($38). "It has a higher cut to mesh panels and the curvature of the arms for better movement and it also has the T-back. But its an underwire style for those ladies that prefer a little bit more support," Huddy said. "Nice to look at but it also had good coverage," said tester Lexie Helgerson. Good Housekeeping says most women wear the wrong size bra. If you've gained or lost weight, you should get measured again at a department store. According to a recent study, four out of ten women do not wear a sports bra when they exercise. That's not good at all. All women should wear one when working out. |
