Woman hit by train after wheelchair gets stuck

SEATTLE -- A woman in a wheelchair was hit by a train and dragged while on her way to her job at Safeco Field on Sunday morning.

Police said a woman was crossing the railroad tracks on South Royal Brougham Way around 9:30 a.m. When her chair somehow got stuck on the tracks. The woman sat helpless while a train approached.

The train sounded its horn, as did a semi truck that was stopped at a crossing, to warn the woman, but she could not move out of the way.

The train could not stop on time to avoid a collision and hit he woman, dragging her for several yards. When the train finally came to a stop, the impact threw the woman from her chair.

The woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center and was expected to survive.
