Online database of toxic toys set to launch

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Toxic toys took center stage on Friday as state lawmakers learned of a new way to help parents to keep these dangerous toys off the shelves and away from kids.

The Washington Toxics Coalition gave lawmakers a preview of a new database of toxic toys, which is set to launch next week. The database aims to inform parents of recalled toys, as well as toys that contain hazardous chemicals but have not yet been recalled.

"We want them to stop using harmful chemicals, to use safer substitutes and to inform consumers (of) what's in the products," said Erika Schreder, a scientist with the coalition.

The database will be available on the Web site healthytoys.org next Wednesday. The site will feature ratings of some 1,5000 different toys based on test results and alert parents of any chemicals found in the toys.
