Flooded family receives new home, fresh start

LEWIS COUNTY, Wash. -- A local family who lost everything during the December floods can finally start rebuilding their lives, thanks to people helping people.

The December floods pushed Charles and Martina Christin's home half a mile wide field and left it in shambles. But there was little the couple could do but to sigh at the sight of what used to be their home; the Christins have no insurance to help them rebuild.

"First I thought about making it into a hunting shack, cutting it in half and gutting it out, but the more you look at it, it's gross," said Charles. "As soon as you move the mud up, it starts stinking."

The Christins and their baby were left with nothing. They were forced to move into a camped 5th-wheel trailer.

But on Wednesday their luck took a huge positive turn. The family now has a triple-wide manufactured building to call their own, thanks to a Seattle church group.

"It's going to be very nice to come home again," said Charles.

Volunteers with the Center for Spiritual Living delivered the home on Wednesday. It took three trucks, a lot of planning and a number of volunteers to make it happen.

The church's Homeward Bound Coalition joined forces with other supporters, including lumber and trucking companies, and began raising donations months ago in order to help flood victims.

"This is almost like giving birth to another baby," said Martina.

Watching their hard work come to fruition was overwhelming for the volunteers as well.

"This has been a dream we've had and we've envisioned it. But to see all the equipment here, we know we're giving somebody a new foundation to live in and it's extremely gratifying," said Cindy Mitchell with the coalition.
