BREMERTON, Wash. -- A woman has been slain in Bremerton, and police say her husband is being held for investigation of first-degree murder.

According to a police statement, 27-year-old Michael Charles Cully was arrested in the death of 26-year-old Girlie Q. Weight. She was found dead in the couple's apartment late Monday morning after Cully called police, saying she had been assaulted and was not breathing.

Officers say he later confessed to the killing. It initially was reported as a stabbing, but police have not said how Weight died.

"They are happily married; they always got along," said neighbor Thomas Debord. "My door and their door opened up and the doors almost touch, and I never heard anything come out of that place but love and kindness and a kind word said to each other. They had a beautiful baby."

The couple's 1-year-old daughter has been placed with Child Protective Services.

Cully is being held on $1 million bail. He could appear in Kitsap County Superior Court as early as Tuesday afternoon.
