1 dead, 1 injured in Federal Way collision

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- At least one person is dead and another is critically injured following a head-on collision on Thursday.

The crash, which involved a brown minivan and a red Mazda, occurred in the 32100 block of Hoyt Road SW around 6 p.m.

Police said it appears the Mazda, which was headed north on the roadway, was speeding at the time of the crash. The speed limit on the roadway is posted as 35 mph.

The passenger of the Mazda, a man in his 20s, was killed in the crash. The driver, who was critically injured, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.

A woman and her two kids, ages 2 and 6, were inside the van at the time of the crash. The three were taken to St. Francis Hospital with minor injuries. They are said to be in stable condition.

The names of the victims are not yet available.

Police said the stretch of Hoyt Road near the scene of the crash will remain shut for several hours while they investigate.
