TACOMA - A deadly shooting at a house party near J Street early Saturday has left some area residents nervous and talking about moving away from the formerly quiet, peaceful neighborhood.

Meanwhile, police are still looking for the man who opened fire at the party, killing a 32-year-old man with a single gunshot wound to the chest at about 2:15 a.m.

One neighbor, Roger Pigue, told KOMO News that crime in the neighborhood has been getting worse in recent months and that he is planning to move to get away from it.

"It makes me want to move somewhere else, another state possibly," Pigue said. "It wasn't six months ago that another gentleman was shot to death a few blocks down," he said.

Another neighbor, Iris Maria, said the violence is making her nervous, too.

"It's really scary, because we had a drive-by a couple years ago, and we actually had the bullets go through someone else's house in the bedroom," she said.

Saturday's incident was even closer to home, she said.

"We never had any problems in the apartments until someone else purchased it," she said. "Now we have some not so good people up in there."

Pigue said there were a lot of people at the house party in the 800 block of S. 41st Street, which started during the day as a barbecue.

"About midnight they got noisy, and I asked them to quiet down, and they seem to quieten down," he said. "But about 2:16 in the morning I heard two gunshots."

Witnesses said the pop-pop of gunfire followed an argument at the party.

When police arrived on scene, they found the victim with a single gunshot wound to the torso, Tacoma police said. He was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, but recovery efforts were unsuccessful and he died.

Police rounded up everyone at the party for interviews, and had to charter a bus to take them all downtown for questioning.

Despite all of the potential witnesses, police still have no information about the suspect at this time, or a description.

In the meantime, Pigue is doing his own investigation - looking for another place to live after eight years on J Street.

He's thinking about moving back home to Texas.

"It's safer back home," he said.
