EASTON, Wash. -- The State Patrol says the occupants of two cars involved in a shooting near Snoqualmie Pass did not know each other. Now troopers want to know whether the incident was a case of road rage or a random act of violence.
The patrol says both cars were eastbound Sunday night when three shots were fired into a car in the left lane from a car in the right lane. The shots shattered the glass of the car carrying a family from Moses Lake. No one was hit, but flying glass caused minor cuts to the neck of a passenger, a 3-year-old girl. Det. Sgt. Tom Hickman said the bullets stopped inches short of hitting the 3 year old and a 5 year old, who were both riding in the back seats. "You can see a bullet strike on the door and a bullet strike on the rear passenger which, I'm sure, came very close to hitting those children," he said. Troopers arrested 31-year-old Eric Martinez of Tacoma and 20-year-old Delilah Garaas in his car and booked them into the jail at Ellensburg for investigation of assault. Troopers said the couple first passed the victims' car, then slowed down to nearly 30 mph in order to let the car catch up. Then, as the car approached, the two opened fire, troopers said. "We don't know what the motive is. That's why we want to follow up with victims and see if they had an altercation," said Hickman. Martinez and Garaas faced a judge on Monday and admitted to having opened fire on the passing car. Both are being held on a $1 million bail. Martinez also faces a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and his passenger had an outstanding warrant on a drug charge. |
