Blind woman fears losing her bus route following complaint
By KOMO Staff
EVERETT, Wash. -- A local bus stop has become a battle ground between one legally-blind rider who depends on the bus and a neighbor who insists the route must go.
Patty Barton says she's either got to ride the bus or stay home. "I can't see well enough to drive so I'm dependent on the bus," she said. "That was one reason we chose this neighborhood. It had excellent bus service." The bus schedule is her bible and the fare pass her ticket to freedom. "If you take away the bus, that's like taking away somebody's car," Barton said. But now Barton worries one squeaky wheel might move the bus. "It is not right for myself and my neighborhood to take it because one person gripes," she said. That person is neighbor Dan Stahlberg, who has complained to Everett Transit numerous times following a close call. "The bus came so close to hitting me, didn't care whether I lived or died. And now I don't want your buses on my street," he said. Stahlberg's complaint is that the streets are too narrow and there aren't any sidewalks. But his complaint could open up a whole new can of worms as there are more than ten miles of bus routes that run on streets without sidewalks. Barton says the good news is she may have found a way around Stahlberg's complaint. Barton's husband happens to be a planner for Everett Transit and figured out a way to save the route. The Bartons are reluctant but willing to sell a stretch of their land to the city for a bus turnaround. It's a plan Stahlberg likes because it gets buses off his street. "Safety has to come before ridership," he said. The Bartons say they're willing to give up a piece of land in exchange for a peace of mind. "Knowing that if something happens to me, Patti has transportation," said Kevin. The city is considering the plan. Everett Transit is assessing neighbors' needs and looking at the land offer to see if it should rearrange its bus service. A public hearing is planned for next month. |
