ELMIRA, Idaho (AP) - A man has died and a woman is in the hospital following a freak accident involving a deer north of Sandpoint.

Idaho State Police and Bonner County sheriff's deputies say the crash occurred Friday morning on U.S. Highway 95 near Elmira.

According to their reports, a deer was hit by a northbound Chevrolet Sprint driven by 62-year-old Stephen Cummings of Sandpoint.

Cummings and a passenger escaped injury, but the animal's carcass was hurled into the windshield of a southbound Honda Civic.

The driver of the Civic, 69-year-old Alan Roebuck of Bonner's Ferry, died at the scene and a passenger, Georgina S. Roebuck, was taken to Bonner General Hospital.
