VANCOUVER, Wash. -- After spending the night in a remote, mountainous area, two young girls were found by searchers Monday tired, but in good physical condition.

The girls, ages 7 and 10, became separated Sunday from their father and 15-year-old brother during a hike on Tarbell Trail north of Battleground.

After looking for more than 12 hours, ground searchers with Fire District 13 found the girls Monday morning about four miles from where the hike began, Clark County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Steve Shea said.

The girls had water, but only limited clothing and no flashlights, the Vancouver Columbian reported.

"There's the obvious exposure issue up here, and there's creeks and ravines and wild animals out here. It's a very dangerous place to be lost," Shea said. Coyotes, cougars and bear inhabit the area, he said.

The family had been on several day hikes before but not on that particular trail, Shea said.

"It's common that people get lost up in these areas," he said.

More than three dozen searchers from various agencies searched for the girls, including canine units and air units.

Shea said the father and son became separated from the girls around 3 p.m. Sunday, and became lost themselves while looking for them. The father called 911 around 7:30 p.m., and a plane found the father and son around 1 a.m. using infrared sensors.

The girls were found about one mile away, Shea said.
