Vandals cause $500,000 in damage
By KOMO StaffFREDERICKSON, Wash. -- Sheriff's deputies say vandals caused up to a half-million dollars in damage to heavy construction equipment over the weekend. Sheriff spokesman Ed Troyer said sometime Saturday afternoon or evening, the vandals may have used an excavator to dig a hole to try to bury a dump truck. The vandals also crashed the construction vehicles into each other and smashed the engines at the site in the 3800 block of 200th Street East.
Investigators said it appears vandals used a couple of big excavators to smash in other pieces of equipment, damaging 24 pieces of heavy machinery in all between noon and 8 p.m. "Just catastrophic damage," said Tom Nielsen of Northwest Construction of Bellevue. "I can't believe anybody would do this or have the gumption to do so much damage. It's incredible."
Troyer said investigators believe the construction site may have been intentionally targeted, and asked anyone with information to call 253-591-5959. Nielsen agrees his company may have been targeted, but he doesn't know why. He said he is not aware of anyone harboring a grudge against the company. "That's a big hole," said Nielsen. "Yes, they didn't get all of the way done. You could tell they really didn't know what they were doing." Northwest Construction is clearing the land for new distribution center for Whirlpool similar to the Ikea center next door. Since this is the site of a former gravel pit the company doesn't believe eco-terrorists are responsible. "At this point we don't have any leads," Troyer said. "We're expecting it to be somebody that knows the machinery was there.. and knew how to start and operate all of the equipment." Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and charges. |
