Two caught on tape stealing from state building
By Keith Eldridge
TUMWATER, Wash. -- Police are looking for two burglars caught on tape breaking into one of the state health department headquarters buildings in Tumwater.
New state office buildings are designed to be impenetrable, but two men got into this department office building Sunday morning simply by using a crowbar. "The first male turns to the second and gets a crowbar and walks up to the camera... tries breaking the camera," said Det. Jen Kolb of Tumwater police as he described surveillance video. But before he tried smashing the camera, the camera got a good look at him. Both men are believed to be in their 20s or early 30s. The health department says the pair made off with a couple of computers and computer monitors and perhaps a printer. People at the health department say they're fortunate that when these guys came around the corner loaded with all of that technology, they weren't loaded with information. All of the data is stored on a network somewhere else. "The files and data are on a server at a different location in a secure room," said Health Department Risk Manager Dennis Anderson. "So there's no actual data of a sensitive nature on those computers." It has police wondering if this is an inside job by someone who knew exactly where to find things. "But it does appear that they were hitting something specific or they knew where to go and when to be there," Det. Kolb said. The burglary wasn't discovered until Sunday afternoon. The health department won't say why the alarm system didn't go off."It's extremely alarming and that's why we're taking all of these lengths to catch these guys because we want to stop them before they commit any other crimes," he said. Police say the pair came well prepared with their crowbar. They just didn't figure on the camera withstanding the beating and capturing the whole burglary on tape. Tumwater police say if you recognize one or both of the men to give the police a call. |
