VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - A 17 year-old who said he was distracted by a bee drove his car into a bike lane and hit and killed a classmate who was riding a bike Friday evening.

Police on Saturday identified the teen killed in the incident as 17-year-old Daniel Jackson of Vancouver.

The driver was identified as 17-year-old Dane Gabriel, and his passenger was 18-year-old Amanda Galegos, both of Vancouver, police said.

All three attended Evergreen High School, where Jackson was a junior and Gabriel and Galegos are seniors, school officials said.

According to Vancouver police, the car was heading south on Southeast 136th Avenue when it veered into the bicycle lane and hit the bicyclist about 7:30 p.m.

Police said it appears that neither speed, alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the collision.

Instead, Gabriel told investigators that a bee flew into the vehicle, and he veered into the bicycle lane while attempting to get the bee out. Investigators did find a bee in the backseat of the vehicle.

No citations were initially issued, and Gabriel and Galegos were released to his parents.
