Woman still waiting for insurance to repair roof damaged on NYE

NORTH BEND, Wash. -- Months have passed since a tree split a local woman's home in half, but the insurance company still hasn't fixed the hole.

For weeks rain dripped through the gaping hole where a huge fir sliced Nancy Van Rissegham's roof on New Year's Day. And the rain water has created problems of its own. For starters, it ruined her new flooring.

"It's all warped, it's like a roller coaster," she said.

And when it rained, it poured for Van Rissegham. Her warped doors no longer shut. And the insurance adjuster told her moving crews didn't feel safe inside the house and refused to finish packing the remainder of her belongings.

"That's a family antique organ that sits in the rain and (it) makes me sick every time I come here," she said.

What's more, when crews removed the tree, they found asbestos in the ceiling. All of it had to be cleaned out, which slowed repairs.

But it's been more than two months and Van Rissegham still has a gaping hole in her roof. To say she's disappointed in her insurance company would be putting it mildly.

"I have one of the best policy plans there is. I don't understand," Van Rissegham said.

Stress isn't good for Van Rissegham's condition. It exacerbates her multiple sclerosis symptoms.

So KOMO 4 Problem Solvers called Allstate Insurance to find out more about the holdup. We put Van Rissegham on the phone with the top claims manager.

"I'm just really sad," she told him. "I'm really, really, really sad."

The manager promised to handle Van Rissegham's case personally.

"I really felt invisible like nobody knew what was going on with me and what was happening, and now I feel like I'm being heard," Van Rissegham said.

The insurance company gives her $50 per day for living expenses, but she says she doesn't want the money. Instead she wants to return to her home, the way it was before the tree came tumbling down.

"This was a beautiful house at one time. You'd never know it today," she said.
