'First we have the floods, then we have the fire'

CHEHALIS, Wash. -- Investigators looking into the cause of Tuesday's fire at the local Eagles Lodge say it is still too hot and dangerous for them to go inside, so the cause of the fire will remain a mystery for a little while longer.

But it's not just the loss of the lodge that has the local residents upset -- it's the burned contents. The place was full of appliances and furniture that were earmarked for flood victims who've already lost everything once.

"First we have the floods, then we have the fire," said Debbie Campbell.

About $100,000 worth of stoves, sofas, washers, dryers, tables, and chairs were ruined. Eagles member Jay Mowry handed out furniture to flooded families and says demand for donations is huge.

"Sometimes people bring a truckload of furniture in and it didn't even get in the building; people are standing in line waiting for it," he said.

Dianne Dory's family has been confined to her upper floor since the floods wiped them out. They've just begun moving downstairs this week and filling their home with donations.

"A table, couch, love seat, sofa," she said.

As a foster mom and United Way board member, Dory is typically a giver who finds accepting donations difficult.

"Sometimes you're just so down you do things you wouldn't normally do," she said.

The United Way will house future furniture donations in the old Yardbirds Shopping Center in Chehalis, which offered storage space starting next month.

But in the short term, even though there's a need for appliances and mattresses, The United Way in Lewis County has no place to put them for now.

So Governor Chris Gregoire and the United Way are encouraging people to only donate money or gift cards for now.
