'Sounders' not an option for Seattle's new MLS team name

SEATTLE -- Seattle soccer fans will be able to vote on three possible names for the city's new Major League Soccer team, but "Sounders" won't be an option.

"I have great respect for the Sounders and the club's history," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement. "While we should celebrate the past, we believe the MLS Seattle team should be about where we are headed tomorrow and help position the club globally."

Beginning next Thursday, fans will be able to vote at www.mlsinseattle.com. The owners have not yet announced what the three choices will be.

The winning name will be announced April 7.

Owners said deposits have been placed on more than 13,000 season tickets since the new team was announced last fall.

Seattle's professional soccer team will play its home games at Qwest Field, which will seat 24,500 for soccer.
