Hundreds of airports across the country are installing new bomb detectors.

It's all part of the government's plan for airports to screen all bags for explosives. But if your bag is not packed right, it can really slow you down.

So the government has issued new guidelines to help you get through security faster:

• Pack your shoes last at the top of your suitcase. It's easier for screeners to search them if they're on top.
• Put your toothbrush in a plastic bag so screeners won't have to touch it.
• Spread books throughout your bag. Books clumped together are too dense and can't be scanned by the bomb detectors.
• Don't put any food or drinks in there. Things like cheese and chocolate can give a false positive reading for explosives and set off the bomb alarms.
• (Fruitcake is also too dense to be scanned. So leave the fruitcake at home or carry it with you on the plane.)
• Leave all your bags unlocked so screeners won't have to force them open.
• Leave gifts unwrapped - because the screeners will unwrap any they find.
• And, perhaps most importantly, don't put undeveloped film in checked luggage. Bomb detection machines will ruin it. The TSA says you can let normal film go through your carry-on bags at the terminal security checkpoint X-Ray machines. However, high speed and professional-grade film should always be hand inspected.
