TUKWILA - He gained trust by posing as a military hero. But this military hero is really an imposter -- stealing hearts and emptying bank accounts.
"He told me he was a Captain in the Navy," said one victim Janice.
"Then he proceeded to tell me he was serving on the USS Kennedy," said Catherine, another victim.
He was well spoken, well dressed, and would claim his wife died at childbirth.
It was the kind of story that most women would take quite to heart, a really sad story," Catherine said.
The man is Reggie Malone. Malone told Catherine he was a military hero, a decorated Navy SEAL.
"There wasn't any piece of him that I didn't think was just perfect in every way," Catherine said.
When Catherine met Malone through an on-line dating service last May, she knew she had met her perfect match.
By September, the couple planned to marry.
"It was a glorious feeling, it really was," she said.
That glorious feeling wouldn't last.
While Catherine was planning their wedding, Malone was trolling the Internet and seeing Barbara on the side.
He was seeing other women too -- many other women. Our investigation shows Malone spun a web of lies that stretched across international boundaries.
We found victims throughout the U.S. and as far away as Germany. None of the women ever questioned his long absences. After all, this man who claimed to be a high-ranking Navy SEAL was often at sea, fighting the war on terrorism.
"He acted like a real credible military person," said victim Janice.
Three years ago, Janice fell in love and married Reggie Malone. He told her that top-secret missions would often keep them apart.
Then, Janice stumbled on the truth -- he wasn't going to Kosovo. He was gainfully employed in Seattle and seeing other women.
She said she would have never believed it until she had the evidence, which came from what Malone left behind -- the evidence came from what Malone left behind -- fake I.D's and Navy SEAL paraphernalia. He ordered it all from catalogs.
And "top secret government folders" he carried in his briefcase were instead, full of e-mails from other women.
And there was more.
"A lot of evidence of stealing from women, emptying bank accounts, jewelry I have here of other women's," Janice said.
Ten years ago, Malone was convicted of stealing jewelry from Geraldine while he dated her roommate. She lost an expensive watch, earrings, and a diamond and ruby necklace.
Malone later confessed that he gave the jewelry to other women as engagement gifts.
And court documents reveal more lies.
Malone was convicted of impersonating a King County Sheriff's Deputy and had prior convictions for armed robbery.
Faced with the truth, Janice had the marriage annulled.
"It was fraud, and I wanted it called what it was," Janice said.
But, last year, as Catherine planned her wedding, she knew nothing about Reggie Malone's past.
She might never have known if her friends hadn't gotten suspicious.
Those suspicions led to "Authentiseal.org" - the Web site's "Wall of Shame" exposes military fraud.
There was Malone's picture, along with complaints from more than a dozen victims.
"I completely lost control. I was absolutely heartbroken," Catherine said.
The End Of The Road
But the mask was about to come off. For Malone -- it was one scam too many.
After a month-long investigation, KOMO 4 News found Reggie Malone at a local motel in Tukwila.
And our camera rolled as Tukwila police busted The Imposter.
We tried to ask why he would scam these women -- why lie and tell people he was a Navy Seal?
We got no answers from Malone. And neither did Samantha, his latest victim.
She was staying there with Malone when she found out he was a fraud.
While Malone is led off to jail, Samantha went back to the motel room, coming to grips with the Imposter's scam.
"My first reaction is that I was incredibly stupid," she said. "But then again, I asked all the right questions."
Tukwila police and other law enforcement agencies are asking questions too -- all based on our investigation.
Samantha says she feels angry and hurt. But with Reggie Malone behind bars - Samantha believes the Imposter's game can now come to an end.
"There won't be any other women, hopefully," she said.
Right now, Reggie Malone is being held without bail on two previous theft charges. The prosecutor's office tells us he won't get a hearing or a chance for bail until Feb. 7.
