Better Avoid That Black Cat -- It's Friday The 13th

By John Sharify

SEATTLE - Tim Kammer doesn't mind standing under a ladder, or stepping on a crack. He's sure it won't break his mother's back.

Then again, Tim is a proud member of "Society for Sensible Explanations."

"It's just a piece of metal," says Kammer referring to the ladder he's standing under.

A piece of metal for one person, could be someone else's nightmare.

Superstitions give us comfort and control, says Albert Carlin, emeritus professor from the University of Washington.

"Superstitions happen when people don't have a good control over what's happening around them," says Carlin.

Take, for example, a baseball pitcher pitching a no-hitter. If you believe in superstitions, while he's pitching that no-hitter, you better not say a word about it. It could ruin his good fortune. At least that's what some people say.

"You don't want to say anything because it'll jinx it," says Carlin, an expert on anxiety.

"You and I both know there's absolutely no way that what you think is going to affect the outcome," says Carlin with a smile.

Then why is that when Friday the 13th rolls around, people stay home from work? They don't eat in restaurants. They don't fly. Just ask Riz Samad. The University District Travel Agent is on the phone with a customer who refuses to fly on Friday the 13th.

'Nope, flat out no. He said 'I'm not going to fly on Friday the 13th!' " says Samad.

Some like to point out that Noah's flood started on a Friday. And add the unlucky 13 to the equation, you better watch out.

And watch out if you break a mirror, because you'll be breaking what?

"Supposedly part of your essence, part of your being, part of your soul," says Kammer.

So be careful out there today. Tomorrow you can relax.
