Racist Group Is Spreading Messages Of Hate

By Keith Eldridge

THURSTON COUNTY - A white racist group is using Anthony Whitfield's case to spread its message of hate.

Anthony Whitfield, an African American, is charged with having unprotected sex with several white women without telling them he has HIV. Now many of those women are testing positive.

People in Lacey and Olympia woke up to racist fliers on their doorsteps.

The flier from the group National Alliance says "Don't have sex with blacks. Avoid AIDS."

The racist organization is targeting just a few neighborhoods. But unsuspecting homeowners can't read what's on the paper until they open the baggie containing it.

"It's just printed on one side and it's just kind of inflammatory sort of a hate kind of thing," said Olympia police commander Tor Bjornstad.

"I picked it up and looked at it and I'm like 'what is this?" said a man named Tony who found the flier on his driveway.

"Not all black people, not all white people are infected with AIDS and going out and intentionally doing this," he said. "My wife is caucasian and I think it's a coward's move."

Several of Tony's neighbors are disgusted.

"I don't agree with this kind of stuff at all," said neighbor Gene Meason. "I thought we solved racial problems many many years ago, but we haven't evidently."

But the police say the flier is not illegal.

"It's unsettling. It's obviously intended to inflame the issue and cause hate and that sort of thing," said Bjornstad. "We don't believe it has any place in this community."

Police say as long as the fliers don't advocate a crime or using violence, they're protected by the constitution.

Neighbor Kayla Freedom said, "It's freedom of speech, so they do whatever. As long they don't offend me or talk to me in any kind of way, I'm okay with it."

But Tony is furious.

"If I would have been out here this morning it probably would have been a different scene. The police would probably have been arresting me."
