The man was identified as Geoffry Godfrey, 60, of Ventura, Calif., who was climbing the mountain with Mark Reynolds, 56, of Fallon, Nev.

The two were not roped together.

Paramedics on the mountain said Godfrey had broken bones in his face, suffered groin pain and was showing signs of hypothermia and shock.

He was taken by ski lift, snow cat and ground transportation to a landing zone and airlifted by the Oregon Army National Guard to a Portland hospital.

Rescuers said Godfrey fell about 30 feet. Reynolds called for help by cell phone at about 7 a.m
