Bainbridge Island Teen Killed, 7 Others Injured In Rollover Crash

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND - A teenage girl was killed and seven others suffered serious injuries when a group of students tried to send an SUV "airborne" by speeding off a large dip in the road on Bainbridge Island early Monday morning.

Investigators said the Bainbridge High School students had successfully "jumped" the car off the dip in Northeast Tolo Road successfully several times when they stopped to switch drivers at about 1:45 a.m.

The new driver tried to make the jump again and lost control while traveling at about 80 miles per hour, sending the Ford Explorer crashing upside-down into a tree on the side of the road, said Liz Lumsden with the Bainbridge Island Police Department.

16-year-old Sarah Gillette, who was riding in the rear cargo area of the Explorer, died at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

Four passengers were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with critical injuries.

Three others, including the 14-year-old driver, were taken to Harrison Memorial Hospital on the island with minor injuries.

Lumsden said the SUV belonged to the parents of one of the teens and that the vehicle was taken without permission.
