'The Imposter' Is Caught Once Again

'The Imposter' Is Caught Once Again

By Liz Rocca

BELLEVUE - The lies begin to unravel at a Bellevue Hotel. Two women have come to see the man in room 254.

Lisa and Marie have been dating Reggie Malone for months. Neither woman knew about the other until now.

Now that they know, they're determined to confront Malone.

"You lied to me about Lisa," says Marie as the hotel room door opens. "You told me I'm the only one, there's nobody but me."

Until now, the women believed Malone was a war hero, a decorated Navy SEAL.

They now know he is an imposter -- an imposter who once told a very convincing tale.

"He had been in different areas of the military, he was an officer, a Navy SEAL," says Lisa.

'I Thought He Was A Wonderful Man'

When the two began trading e-mails last year, it didn't take long for Reggie Malone to get Lisa Johnson's attention.

"I was absolutely impressed," says Lisa. "I thought he was a wonderful man."

In e-mail chats, he told her he traveled a lot on top secret missions.

But she thought there was a future with this charming man who swept her off her feet.

She didn't know there were other women who were also being charmed.

"According to what he told me, he was a crash scene investigator and at the time I first met him he was in Iraq," says Marie.

Marie was also smitten with Malone.

His stories included vivid details about working in war-torn Iraq.

"And so they seemed real because they were so detailed," says Marie.

Not A War Hero, But A Homeless Drifter

But when the women finally met Malone - each felt a sudden chill. Malone didn't have a dime in his pocket.

Lisa says his top secret tales grew more bizarre.

"Everything was just so extreme," says Lisa. "That's when I started to doubt it. It was way too good to be true and there was no proof of any of it."

No proof because Reggie Malone is a homeless drifter.

He's a military imposter twice convicted for stealing from women he meets on the Internet.

It would take Lisa and Marie weeks to learn the truth.

He's Been Busted Before

But we know it well.

We busted Reggie Malone in 2003.

Our investigation turned up dozens of women around the world who claim he conned them.

A jury convicted him of stealing more than $20,000 from Janice Lenertz, a former wife who got an annulment after she learned Malone was a fraud.

"He conned me," says Lisa. "He definitely got me because I definitely believed him."

At It Again

In December, we discovered Malone was doing it all over again.

He was telling those stories about being a Navy SEAL and violating a judge's order to stay off Internet dating sites.

In the days before the women confronted him at that Bellevue hotel, Lisa thought Malone was in Switzerland.

His text messages claim his daughter died in a skiing accident and he's at her autopsy.

But a surveillance team and undercover camera for KOMO 4 News got pictures of Malone at Sea-Tac Airport.

He'd been living in the terminal for days.

"He knows what he's doing; I think it's evil," says Lisa. "I think it's the most devious thing I've ever heard somebody do."

"Nothing is off limits to him," agrees Marie. "He'll tell you anything that he thinks will pull at the heart strings of a woman."

'He's Not A Man'

When they learned the truth, the women were determined to confront Malone and wanted our cameras there.

We went to that Bellevue hotel, but Malone locked himself in the bedroom.

"Because he's not a man," says Marie.

When I tried to talk to him, Malone dodged our camera and my questions.

It was disappointing because I wanted to ask Malone about some jewelry Lisa brought us; jewelry that Malone left at her Florida home.

Jewelry the police are now very interested in, after we turned up a claim for damages Malone filed against the City of Tukwila.

Remember when police caught him in 2003?

Malone claims Tukwila cops confiscated his jewelry, nearly $5,000 worth, and failed to return it.

"Some of these items appear to be sitting before me right now which were never in the possession of the police department," says Eric Drever, a Detective Sergeant with the Tukwila Police Department.

Drever launched an investigation to determine if Malone filed a fraudulent claim against the city.

But Malone's trouble doesn't end there.

Bellevue police jailed him for allegedly assaulting Marie and me in that hotel room.

"He deserves it," says Lisa as she watched Malone being led away in handcuffs.

"He deserves to be put away. He put a coat over his head and hung his head in shame the way he should have."
