Woman Nearly Killed By Flying Piece Of Plywood

HOQUIAM - A woman and her young niece were nearly killed when a huge piece of plywood flew off a truck and right into their windshield.

It is the same type of accident that forced a change in the law. But the victim in this case doesn't believe that new law goes far enough.

The plywood went right through the windshield shattering the glass and coming within inches of Elizabeth Chaffin's face.

"I could pretty much kiss it," she said. "I had glass all over my face, in my nose, ears and mouth. It was pretty traumatic."

It was last Friday morning along Highway 101 north of Hoquiam. A truck from Butcher's Scrap and Metal coming in the opposite direction lost the 4x8-foot piece of plywood. She says she and her 3-year-old niece Alexis are lucky to be alive.

"God. God was with me," Elizabeth Chaffin said. "There's no other explanation."

Truck driver David Webb says he didn't know it had happened until another driver flagged him down and he returned to see if anyone was hurt.

"And he did come up and apologize and said 'I'm sorry,' " Elizabeth Chaffin said. "What do you say to the guy who says he's sorry? That it's OK? It's not OK. My kids could have been without a mom and their life could have been changed forever."

A similar accident blinded Maria Federici. She campaigned to change the law. If someone is hurt by an unsecured load, it becomes a gross misdemeanor and now carries a $5,000 fine and up to one year in jail. Elizabeth wasn't injured so the truck driver only got a $194 ticket.

"I think they ought to be hauled off to jail and maybe that'll teach them a lesson," Chaffin said.

The plywood has been removed and the glass has been cleaned up. This car is going to be put back together again.

But for Elizabeth and her niece, they'll never be the same.

"I'm still living it," she said. "Every time I close my eyes I see the plywood. I'm having a hard time sleeping."

Elizabeth says she's driving again, but every time she sees a truck coming the other way she pulls to the side of the road.
