Southcenter Mall About To Get A Lot Bigger

By KOMO Staff

TUKWILA - One of our area's biggest malls is about to get bigger.

Thursday, ground was broken on the Westfield Southcenter expansion project. Most of the details are still secret, but we do know more than 70 new stores are coming in.

Westfield Southcenter is spending $220 million to attract people from mall-loving shoppers to movie-goers.

Westfield is going to add a 16-screen movie theater, and the rest of the expansion project includes 400,000 square feet of stores galore.

"We're going to have a good shot at getting Banana Republic, a good shot at Anne Taylor, Williams Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Cheesecake Factory, PF Changs," said John Schroder, Westfield Chief Operating Officer.

Schroder says the new addition will bring in 4 million new customers a year -- shoppers who are looking for much more than just a new pair of shoes.

"Consumers are far more circumspect, they expect a lot more out of the centers," Schroder continued. "They expect more convenient parking, valet parking, family rooms…"

Mall designers want entire families to visit:

"The Westfield Playtown, the family lounges, which are state of the art facilities, plasma TVs with children's programming, family restrooms, diaper-changing tables, nursing stations. As a father of young children, they're the best thing in the world," said Andrew Ciarrocchi, the Westfield General Manager.

Designers unveiled their plans in a gallery: the designs feature scenic backdrops of the Pacific Northwest. They promise a stunning view of Mt. Rainier from the newly designed 3-level food court -- which is also getting a makeover.

"It's not a food court anymore!" Ciarrocchi sa..."We don't use that term because this is going to be different than any food court you've ever seen in terms of the offering and the design."

The plans all add up to an enormous retail outlet, creating one of the largest malls with a new philosophy: Don't shop 'til you drop. Shop, then stick around!

The new addition to the mall should be open in 2008.
