Does It Work? Instant Manicure

Does It Work? Instant Manicure

By Connie Thompson

SEATTLE - Just when you thought you'd seen everything, along comes a new product that promises to revolutionize the act of polishing your finger nails.

It's called "Instant Manicure"- dry, adhesive strips of colored enamel that go on your nails instead of wet polish.

No smudges, and no waiting for paint to dry.

Instant manicure is the brainchild of Avon and it's getting a lot of buzz, but does it work?

Since everyone's fingernails are different I got two volunteers for this test. Rosie Sayyah, and her daughter Lucia, who read about Instant Manicure in a magazine.

"I saw a picture of it and they said, 'New Product!', and I said, 'That's kinda interesting. I always have a hard time applying nail polish," said Lucia.

I ordered two sets- a pink shade called "Instant Rose" and a red shade called "Reddy to Go". Lucia took the red.

The enamel strips look like long flat finger nails. They come in different sizes so you can select a size that closest fits the size of each of your nails.

You peel the strip from the backing, line it up to your nail and smooth it on from the cuticle up, pushing out the air bubbles as you go.

It was nearly a hundred degrees the day of our test, and we discovered heat makes a difference. The hardened enamel was very pliable and almost seemed to melt onto the nail in the heat.

Rosie carefully applied a pink strip to one of her nails as she demonstrated the technique.

"And you put this over the edge," she said, letting the excess strip hang over the end of her nail tip. "Then gently run your thumb nail under this ridge to brake it off."

You essentially use your thumb as a tool, bending the excess enamel over the edge of your fingernail, and rubbing back and forth with your thumb tip, creating a perforated edge. Then, you just remove the excess.

Lucia had a problem. Her nails are wider than the enamel strips. While the color strips went on easily, there were bare strips on either side of the enamel.

Rosie's thinner nails were better suited for the strip sizes. From start to finish, it took about 15 minutes including time to figure out the instructions.

"I liked it!", said Rosie. "It's fun!"

Rosie felt she only got two perfect looking nails out of the ten, but she was impressed with the concept.

"I think with time and practice I could make it look really nice I'd probably buy it more for traveling I think, and for sometimes at the last minute when I look at my nails and say, 'Oh my goodness! I need something to make them look good.' "

Lucia was less impressed. "I think it works well if you're finger nails fit the shape of the tabs," she said. "It didn't work well for my fingernails."

Instant Nails gets a thumbs up if your nails fit the strip sizes. Thumbs down for anyone with very wide finger nails. If they want it to work for everyone, Avon has some work to do.

Instant Manicure is sold in sets of 16 strips for $8.00 and comes in ten colors.

Avon says the finish lasts 14 days, and while the strips do dry to a nice hard finish, Rosie told me she found the nail tips chipped about as much as with regular nail polish.
