Icy Roads Cause A Major Closure

By Jenni Hogan

I received several e-mails this morning asking about road conditions and detour suggestions for the Kent area.

It sure was a slippery commute, especially on Orillia Road South. The main lines on SR 167 and Interstate 5 didn't seem to be affected but the shoulders on these highways, along with on ramps and off ramps, did cause some problems.

At one point, crews had to close Orillia road between Interstate 5 and South 212th Street after a jack-knifed semi, blocked several lanes. The section was closed for most of the morning commute.  Emergency responders even had trouble driving to the scene, because of a sheet of ice that covered the roadway.

I hope the detour routes I suggested on air helped and all of you Jenni Jammers got to your destination on time.

Thanks for the e-mails!

Jenni

UPDATE (11:30am):
I'm hearing of black ice all over the carpool lane on I-5 between South Center Blvd and SR-516 in Tukwilla. Motorists are advised to use extra caution. There are also reports of ice building up on the exits and on-ramps in that area.
